official.fm turns payservice, we are doomed.

Postby oki » August 2nd, 2011, 2:47 pm

Hi!

With the launch of our Starting Package, we're doing a few things differently at official.fm. Basic accounts, like yours, will be limited to 10 tracks.

You currently have more than 10 tracks, but they will all remain playable for the next 45 days. After 45 days, your profile will display only your most recent tracks. We will store any deactivated tracks for 1 year so that you don't have to re- upload after signing up for the Starting Package.

For $30/year ($2.50/month) the Starting Package offers a wider track limit and new cutting-edge features:

Our desktop track manager - the fastest and easiest way to upload and manage your full catalog.
Customized branding of your pages and your embedded players. Your music, your way.
Advanced statistics to help you gain deep insights into your listeners.
Our embeddable live widget to promote your live shows and sell tickets directly to fans from anywhere on the web.
Host up to 20 tracks (upgrade to 200 tracks for +$10/year).
Priority support.

As a special launch offer, if you sign up now, you will be able to host 200 tracks and get unlimited access to any features we develop over the next 12 months. Go here to sign up or get more info:
http://official.fm/payments/cart

If you would like to upload more than 200 tracks, no problem. Get in touch with us at support@official.fm and we will make you a personalized proposal. Inform us about your needs – we are more than happy to work with you!

If you have any concerns, please let us know by submitting a ticket at http://help.official.fm. We'll be glad to find a solution for you.

Pro tip: if you have an extensive catalog and are worried about managing it in order to display the 10 tracks you want, check out the trial version of our Starting Package, so you can use the desktop track manager to help you out.

We are very excited about our growth and upcoming features and hope to make you feel part of our excitement, whether you're using our Starting Package or Basic account.

Computer love,
Your automized official.fm representative

To be fair though Multiply was shit.

hmmm......multiple fairtilizer accounts?

yola.com? (or whatever Pom and Eddie use?)

I think servage.net was about £60 a year for loads of bandwidth, perhaps a few of us could club together...

If that's the way they respect customer loyalty then you're better off without them.
It may have been a free service but what they got in return was promotion of their service all over the place, obviously now that was part of the plan to increase potential customers for when they move to a pay service.
Cunts.
They're holding struggling artists back catalogues to ransom with the threat of dead links and time spent sorting those out, re-upping somewhere else and promoting your new host. Time that could be better spent making more fucking tracks.
Cunts!

Yeah oki, get a yola. Only downside is a 15mb file limit so no long mixes but more than enough for most single tracks.
No issues with copyright so far.

Do they accept buttons and milk bottle tops as payment?

all free hosting eventually turns into paid hosting. it happened with multiple and it's gonna happen eventually with soundcloud too.
here's what I don't get-
web hosting costs $5 a month. that's $1.25 a week. a cup of coffee costs more.
in return you get more space than you could ever fill and not having to worry about shit like this.
not worth it?

Damn, I just opened an account there and I haven't even started loading tracks there yet. After learning about this, I just might as well let them close it up. And if Soundcloud is following suit, I might as well pack it all in and move elsewhere. Yola sounds like a good deal, I'll look into that.

True, although I used official.fm cos really, streaming sucks on all but the shit hot (and thus expensive/business/co-hosting) accounts. Compare on GYBO when people post their own MP3s with the player vs Official/Soundcloud...the latter don't take an age to buffer and tend to play without stopping - and I have a really fast net connection and 5Ghz network, but stuff served off Hostgator (or Servage, or Dreamhost, all the same) always tends to stutter and start later.

I guess you don't get a free lunch?

Am I just being thick or where do I click to delete the tracks there? Or would it be easier to delete my account and re-register?

EDIT: Never mind, I got it.

all my old tunes can still be listened too and downloaded from officialfm, btw, if i linked them in the past.
not sure if thsi is permanent, but its a relief.

i got a yola site now, i do like it. only downside to it is, sofar, that you only get full pageview statistics if you pay. and, you dont get any download stats at all. this is a major downside if you ask me, i wanna know how much download i get for each song... :(

and looked into divshare for my longer mixes, because yola has a file size limit. they are free and dont ever delete, they say, and DO have full statistics, which is great. and have players one can post on ones site and forums.
but, you get some limitations though, storage 5 gb, usage 10 gb (per month i think?) im not very good with numbers, can anyone estimate if those limits will be a problem, if i was to use divshare for all my uploads, also the shorter tunes?

Too much arsing about for my liking. I simply paid the $30 for the year. What. That's £1.50 a month?
It hardly breaks the bank, and I don't have to faff about trying to find a smoother / free-er service than the ~ quite frankly very nice ~ Official.fm.

Bought it for a year but I'm gonna start to put things on Mixcloud for my mixes and Bandcamp for mashups.

Not initially you can give away your music for free, I think they didn't remove my mashups yet :) I never checked in a while. I'm not the first bootlegger to go there (Mashville, the project between Big Boi and Black Keys is downloadable from there)
